A tier list is only useful if you know what it is ranking for. Cat Battles is a displacement game — nobody has a health bar, and the only thing that decides a round is who is still on the platform. So this list ranks the eight abilities by how reliably they stop you from being pushed off, or help you push someone else off, in solo queue first and team modes second.

One ability slot, one Q key. The tier list is about what fills that slot. Official game art.
The tier list
| Tier | Ability | Why it sits here |
|---|---|---|
| S | Dash | Recovery plus repositioning in one button. The only ability that fixes the most common death in the game: being caught near the edge. |
| S | Anchor | Turns the two things that kill you — grabs and shoves — into a coin flip. Best ability in 2 and 4 team modes. |
| A | Pounce | The best opener in the game. It starts fights on your terms, but it does nothing once you are the one being pushed. |
| A | Hiss | An interrupt with defensive value. Breaks a clinch before it becomes a lift, which is where most players actually lose. |
| B | Stomp | Strong in pile-ups and near-worthless in a clean 1v1. Pick it in 4 Teams, skip it in Classic. |
| B | Catnip | A short burst window. Good players get value from it; new players press it and cannot tell whether it did anything. |
| B | Fluff Up | Survival insurance. It buys you a second of resistance, not an escape — Dash does the escape better. |
| C | Hairball | Creates space at range, which this game rarely needs. In a ring this small, distance is not the problem. |
What the tiers actually mean
S means the ability changes the outcome of a round you were losing. A means it wins you more openings than it costs you. B means it is fine but situational. C means the situation it is built for almost never happens.
Two honest caveats, because most tier lists will not give you them:
- These are mechanical reads, not datamined numbers. Cute Malt Games has never published cooldowns, damage values or hidden multipliers, and the game does not expose them. Anyone quoting “Dash has a 6-second cooldown” is guessing.
- Tiers shift with the lobby. In a lobby of new players, Dash and Anchor dominate because nobody punishes positioning. In a lobby of players who grab on sight, Hiss and Pounce move up.
S tier in detail
Dash
Every death in Cat Battles has the same shape: you end up closer to the edge than your opponent, and one shove finishes it. Dash answers that directly. It is the only ability that gets you out of a position you already lost, which makes it the safest first purchase for a new account.
Anchor
Anchor does the opposite job: it makes the position you are standing in harder to take from you. Grabs are the setup for every elimination in the game, because a grabbed cat can be lifted and walked to the edge. Anything that shortens or breaks that sequence is worth more than any damage-adjacent effect.
How to test a tier claim in one round
Do not take the list on faith — the game is small enough to test in three minutes:
- Buy or equip the ability.
- Play one Classic round with one rule: never punch. Only use the ability to avoid falling.
- Count how many times it saved you from going over.
If the answer is zero across a full round, the ability is not doing the job you bought it for. Swap it. That single test is worth more than any ranking, including this one.
Which ability first
If you have exactly one purchase in you, buy Dash. It is the only pick that is strong in every mode and at every skill level, and it stays useful after you learn to grab. If you mostly play 2 or 4 Teams with friends, Anchor is the better buy — team modes are decided by who survives the pile-up, not who starts it.
Coins for that first ability come from the five working codes, worth 1,150 Coins, which is enough to buy one outright without grinding. The codes page lists all five with their exact payouts, and the abilities guide goes through what each one does in a round.
Questions
What is the best ability in Cat Battles?
Dash for solo play and Anchor for team modes. Dash recovers a lost position; Anchor stops a position from being taken. Both beat every damage-style pick because rounds are decided by displacement.
Can you equip more than one ability?
No. There is one ability slot and Q fires whatever is in it. Buying a second ability replaces the first rather than adding to it.
Are these tiers based on real stats?
No, and that is deliberate. The game does not expose cooldowns or damage numbers anywhere. The tiers are mechanical reads of what each ability does in a round, plus how often that situation actually happens.
Does the tier list change between modes?
Yes. Stomp and Catnip move up in 4 Teams because fights become pile-ups, and Anchor becomes the single best pick in 2 Teams because one held teammate usually decides the round.
